On the 9th of August in 1956 Lilian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Rahima Moosa and Sophia Williams led a 20,000 strong multi-racial collection of women carrying a petition with 100,000 signatures to the Union buildings in protest of the proposed Urban Areas Act.
This women’s day Groundsweep Productions will be paying homage to these women with a celebration and concert showcasing some of the Durban underground scene’s most talented women in music.
The event will open with DJ EM8 aka Emma Kelly who will kick things off with some fresh and funky beats. Ryder Baney, most famous on the local scene for her involvement with Deadpandoll and Type – 7, will be showcasing some of her original solo alternative material.
The magnificently talented and beautiful songbird, Victoria Raw will be there with her band, this neo-soul vocalist is a must see! Victoria is a powerhouse of incredible vocals and dynamic talent and has been making waves on the local scene for some time.
Leading the charge into the business end of the evening is Red Robyn, the dreamy songstress most notable for her involvement with Blvck Crystals, who I last saw perform at Cool Runnings a couple of months ago. I am always blown away by Robyn’s mesmerizing performances and unique sounding vocal arrangements.
The evening will round off with Otarel Mabusela. Otarel brings a powerfully raw and honest sound to the Durban music scene and thrills audiences wherever she goes.
The event will be held at arguably one of Durban’s most loved and iconic music venues, Cool Runnings.
