The Drakensberg has always been a mystical destination atop my local travel bucket list. A place many friends and family had spoken so fondly about but one I was yet to visit. When Little Switzerland offered me the opportunity to attend their first Wine Tasting Weekend, I was counting the days til I hit the road.
With the craziness of the world at the moment, this was the perfect opportunity to disconnect and raise a glass or few to the finer things in life. The weekend promised three days of great wine and good company and this was all we could think about as we made the journey from Joburg.
On our arrival, there was already a buzz around the resort. We checked in and immediately headed for some wine to warm us up on a chilly evening. Our first tasing was a foray into the delicious wines from Franschhoek Cellar. Their portfolio exudes elegance and can easily compete with some of the best our country has to offer. Their robust reds definitely piqued our palates and ensured the start to our experience was a warming and satisfying one.
We ventured further into Little Switzerland’s cozy and welcoming arms where we indulged in more exceptional wines. Vrede en Lust’s award-winning boutique wines are the epitome of boldness and delicate balance. The affectionately named Ella, a beautiful Rhône-style blend, and the Lady J, double platinum winning Syrah, were most definitely our top tastings.
Next we met the pioneers of One Grape Wines. Touted as fun, funky and palatable wines that can be enjoyed by anyone. For those wine drinkers that are new to their vino journey, this range bursts with charm and flavour.
Before dinner, we settled into our garden room which was waiting for us with another bottle of wine and decadent Drakensberg Memories chocolate. What better way to wind down than savouring a block or two of artisanal dark chocolate made with fine cocoa beans, pure cocoa butter and natural bourbon vanilla. A deep lingering taste with hints of ripe red fruits and a seductively soft finish.
As the Drakensberg air turned chilly, we made our way to the homely dining room for a bountiful dinner buffet. A real feast with something for every taste. We were immediately drawn to the carvery and tucked into a succulent spread complimented by a bottle of Franschhoek Cellar Merlot. The evening grew long and after enjoying our last mouthfuls of dessert, we retired to the warmth and comfort of our room.
Bright and early the next morning, we took a stroll to take in the breathtaking views which envelope Little Switzerland. We even got to meet Spike the resident zebra who is as gentle and friendly as everyone in this idyllic spot. We bade farewell to our stripey friend and enjoyed a hearty breakfast. Then it was time for more wine. Out on the patio we listened to some live music while sipping more of our favourites from the previous evening and snacking on a delicious charcuterie board. We whiled the afternoon away in the bliss of the Berg until it was time for yet another sumptuous dinner experience.
Much incredible food and wine was enjoyed before rounding the evening off with some drinks and jovial conversation at the bar. The next morning it was time to fuel up for the journey home with breakfast and a coffee or two. Sadly our time at Little Switzerland had come to an end. It was a delicious experience all round and one we look forward to having again very soon!
