A Heritage Weekend escape to Cape Town, where warm hospitality, beautiful views and a very comfortable bed made two busy days feel like a proper getaway
There is something wonderfully deceptive about a two-day escape to Cape Town. On paper, it sounds like a restorative coastal break. In reality, you invariably arrive with a diary that is already overflowing, a long list of places you desperately want to see, people you need to catch up with and barely enough time to squeeze it all in. My Heritage Weekend itinerary was exactly that – a whirlwind of commitments that left me immensely grateful to have a true sanctuary to return to at the end of each busy day.

Tucked away on the leafy residential slopes of Green Point, The Tree House Boutique Hotel, part of The Living Journey Collection, feels like a well-kept secret hiding amongst the trees. Its central location puts you within easy reach of the Sea Point Promenade and the vibrant stretches of the Atlantic Seaboard, yet there is an immediate, palpable sense of retreat the moment you cross the threshold.
The hotel is thoughtfully designed around nature, local creativity and vivid colour. It is evident in the striking botanical motifs, the curated local artwork and the inviting warmth of the natural timber textures. It boasts a distinct style that feels sophisticated and considered, without ever trying too hard.
The Art of the Welcome

I arrived late in the evening, greeted by that particular Cape Town chill in the air that somehow always feels just a little sharper after dark. After a long day of travelling and navigating the city, the absolute last thing you want is a complicated check-in process.
Instead, I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Alfred.
From the very moment I walked through the heavy front door, Alfred made me feel genuinely and effortlessly welcome, with a natural ease that immediately took the edge off the evening commute. We often assume that great hospitality requires grand, sweeping gestures. More often than not, I think it is simply about making a weary traveller feel that they have arrived exactly where they are meant to be.
Heading upstairs, I found that my Super Sea View Room was exactly the haven I needed. Comfortable, inviting and wonderfully easy to settle into, it quickly became my dedicated Cape Town basecamp for the weekend. It certainly lived up to its ambitious name, too; pulling back the curtains the next morning revealed the architectural lines of the Green Point skyline stretching out toward a shimmering expanse of the Atlantic Ocean.

After absorbing the frenetic energy of the city all day, there was something deeply satisfying about returning, closing the door behind me, kicking off my shoes and knowing that the next thing on my agenda was absolutely nothing. Ultimately, the sheer comfort of the plush, oversized bed easily won out over any lingering thoughts of answering late-night emails.
A Different Morning Rhythm

The Tree House features just 14 rooms spread across five distinct categories, giving the boutique property an intimate, personalised feel that large-scale city hotels simply cannot replicate. The rooms are deliberately designed with all the practical, modern comforts you crave after a long day of coastal exploring, including expansive king-size beds, pristine en-suite bathrooms, fast Wi-Fi, essential air conditioning, coffee facilities and a selection of designer teas.
But for me, it was the specific combination of tactile comfort, that uninterrupted oceanic horizon right outside the glass and the secluded sense of being tucked safely away above the busy streets that made the space feel so memorable.
Cape Town mornings always seem to have their own unique, unhurried rhythm. The coastal light shifts, the city slowly starts moving and suddenly that carefully protected weekend schedule begins making its demands all over again. This made me incredibly thankful that a beautiful breakfast was already waiting downstairs.

”It wasn’t necessarily about overt grandness or unnecessary fuss, but rather about the seamless way the hotel anticipates exactly what a traveller requires to recharge.”
The hotel serves a thoughtful continental spread that goes well beyond standard, uninspired morning fare. Think thick slices of rustic, home-baked sourdough, robust local artisanal cheeses, premium charcuterie and brightly coloured fresh fruit, all served alongside made-to-order warm breakfast options and an exceptionally good, undeniably strong cup of coffee. For a weekend guaranteed to involve plenty of moving, doing and seeing, it was precisely the kind of elevated morning fare I needed – generous and delicious enough to properly fuel the day without being so heavy that it made me want to crawl straight back under the duvet.
The Quiet Luxury of Ease
When your days are tightly scheduled with social engagements, cultural explorations and navigating unfamiliar streets, the true value of a boutique hotel lies in its ability to completely remove friction from the margins of your itinerary. From the intuitively placed lighting to the flawless housekeeping that magically reset my sanctuary while I was out, every detail worked in quiet harmony. I simply enjoyed the distinct, grounding feeling of finding a rare pocket of calm anchored right in the middle of one of South Africa’s most energetic cities.

The Living Journey Collection describes its various properties as forming an integral part of a personal journey and that overarching philosophy feels particularly resonant here. My Heritage Weekend may have been fleeting, but the property successfully elevated it into a proper, rejuvenating escape.
In the end, the hallmark of exceptional boutique accommodation isn’t just in the tangible amenities it provides, but in the specific state of mind it cultivates. It is about creating an environment so comprehensively relaxing, so perfectly attuned to the art of slowing down, that it leaves you genuinely wishing you had blocked out your diary to book that elusive third night.
