As a Jozi guy, any reason to visit glorious Cape Town is met with much excitement. This time I was brimming with curiosity as I boarded the plane. I was on my way to spend the night in a building that’s always piqued the creative in me. The Grand Daddy Boutique Hotel is an icon of Long Street that’s stood tall and steady for over 120 years.
Stepping into the lobby, I was immersed in the unique quirkiness that makes this space quintessentially Capetonian. Next was a short journey to the rooftop in the most gorgeous old-world elevator – something which is another distinctive calling card of the Grand Daddy.
Once up top, I entered yet another world. The Grand Daddy rooftop is home to the only designer Rooftop Airstream Trailer Park in the world and boy is it a world of its own. Seven rather unassuming Airstream trailers are dotted around and it’s only once you open their doors that you’re met with the most beautifully designed spaces.
Top South African interior designers were brought onboard as part of 2021 Decorex Cape Town Design Trail to create seven spaces reflecting themes unique to a typically South African road trip.
I had the pleasure of spending the night in the Rooftop Safari trailer with interior designed by Frans Alexander Interiors in collaboration with plush Hertex Fabrics. With sunset inspired colours accented by slick blacks, the space envelopes you in the warmth of the African bush in the most beautifully welcoming way. The rooftop is also the perfect space to enjoy a cocktail from the bar and take in the sunset and starry skies. Soon it was time to retire to the comfort of the luxurious queen-sized bed.
After a peaceful night’s sleep in my safari space, I took one more ride in the elevator to enjoy a delicious breakfast. Once I’d savoured the last few sips of coffee and bites of blueberry pancake, it was sadly time to bid farewell to the cool and quirky world of the Grand Daddy.
With so much more still to offer, I’m already looking forward to more magical moments spent in this lovely landmark. Until then, it’s with much gratitude that I say thank you for a night of wonderous adventure! I can’t wait to return to experience more of the Grand Daddy’s cheeky charm.
