Some cars are easy to like. Others challenge what you think you know about driving. The Jetour T1 i-DM manages to do both. At first glance, it looks every bit the rugged SUV, with its upright stance, bold styling and unmistakable road presence. Spend a week with it though and you quickly realise there’s far more going on beneath the surface.
As Jetour’s plug-in hybrid offering, the T1 i-DM introduces a different way of thinking about everyday driving. I spent the week getting to know it the way most South Africans would – navigating Johannesburg’s daily traffic, ticking off meetings across the city and heading to Pretoria for a weekend drive. By the time I handed the keys back, I wasn’t just impressed by the technology, I was impressed by how naturally it fit into my routine.

Built to Stand Out
The T1 i-DM has the kind of design that immediately grabs your attention. Squared-off proportions, muscular lines and a commanding driving position give it an unmistakably adventurous character. It looks ready to leave the city behind at a moment’s notice, even if most of its time is spent tackling urban streets.
Inside, the mood shifts from rugged to refined. The cabin is modern and uncluttered, with soft-touch materials, supportive seats and an expansive infotainment display taking centre stage. There’s an understated elegance to the interior that makes every journey feel just a little more special, while the panoramic sunroof fills the cabin with natural light and creates an airy sense of space.
It feels premium without trying too hard, striking a balance that’s becoming something of a Jetour signature.

A New Kind of Daily Drive
The biggest surprise wasn’t how the T1 i-DM looked. It was how it drove.
Pulling away in near silence takes a moment to get used to. Around town, the electric motor handles much of the work, making traffic feel calmer and considerably more refined. There’s an immediacy to the acceleration that’s different from a traditional petrol engine, delivering smooth, effortless power exactly when you need it.
With a realistic electric-only range of around 80 km on a full charge, I managed to handle my daily urban commutes without burning a single drop of petrol.
As speeds increase or extra performance is called for, the petrol engine joins in so seamlessly that you barely notice the transition. Everything happens quietly and confidently in the background, leaving you to simply enjoy the drive. After a few days, I found myself appreciating the little moments – sitting at traffic lights without an engine humming away, rolling through suburban streets almost silently and realising that driving had somehow become more relaxing.

Technology That Works With You
Modern vehicles are packed with technology, but not all of it feels intuitive. Thankfully, the T1 i-DM keeps things refreshingly straightforward.
The large infotainment display is crisp and responsive, while the digital driver’s display presents all the essential information clearly, including how the hybrid system is performing. Watching the flow of energy between the battery and engine became strangely satisfying, adding another layer to the driving experience.
Wireless charging, multiple USB ports, dual-zone climate control and a premium sound system all contribute to a cabin that feels well equipped for modern life.
The 360-degree camera quickly became one of my favourite features. Whether navigating tight basement parking or reversing into a busy shopping centre bay, it made manoeuvring this larger SUV feel remarkably easy. Safety features such as adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning and blind-spot monitoring quietly do their job in the background, adding reassurance without becoming intrusive.

Johannesburg to Pretoria: Where It Really Comes Alive
A weekend drive to Pretoria has become something of a ritual for me and the T1 i-DM felt perfectly suited to the journey.
Leaving Johannesburg behind, the SUV settled effortlessly into highway cruising. The hybrid system worked seamlessly, delivering confident overtaking performance while maintaining an impressively quiet cabin. Wind and road noise remained well controlled, making conversations easy and long stretches of driving genuinely relaxing.
Arriving in Pretoria on a crisp, clear Highveld afternoon always feels like a welcome escape. The city’s expansive avenues and brilliant blue winter skies offered a beautiful backdrop and the T1 seemed completely at home in the golden afternoon light.
The elevated driving position offered fantastic visibility, while the supportive seats and composed ride meant I stepped out feeling just as fresh as when I’d left home. On the return journey, with the panoramic roof open and the winter sun beginning to soften, it was one of those drives that reminded me why I enjoy reviewing cars in the first place.
Sometimes it’s not about the destination. It’s about finding a vehicle that makes the journey memorable.

Everyday Practicality Meets Tomorrow’s Technology
Despite its advanced drivetrain, the T1 i-DM never feels overly technical. It simply behaves like a well-designed SUV that happens to be smarter about how it uses energy.
There’s generous space for passengers, plenty of luggage capacity and enough clever storage solutions to make everyday life easier. Throughout the week, it proved equally capable of handling grocery runs, work commitments and longer highway drives without ever feeling out of its depth.
For drivers curious about electrification but hesitant to commit to a fully electric vehicle, the plug-in hybrid system offers an appealing middle ground. It brings many of the benefits of electric driving while removing the worry of charging infrastructure on longer journeys. It’s a solution that feels particularly relevant for South African motorists.
Final Thoughts
After a week with the Jetour T1 i-DM, it’s clear this isn’t simply another SUV with a battery added to the equation. It’s a thoughtfully engineered vehicle that blends everyday practicality with forward-thinking technology in a way that feels effortless.
It looks adventurous, drives with impressive refinement and introduces plug-in hybrid motoring without asking you to change the way you live. Instead, it quietly enhances the experience, making every commute a little calmer and every road trip a little more enjoyable. If the future of driving looks like this, it’s a future I’m more than happy to embrace.
