Sanctuary Mandela, the luxury boutique hotel set in Nelson Mandela’s former Houghton home, hosts a media luncheon. The gathering marks the property’s fifth anniversary while spotlighting Heritage Month, Tourism Month, Insights Restaurant’s summer menu and the start of a new season of hospitality.

From the first sod turning in 2018 to opening its doors during one of the most challenging periods in hospitality, Sanctuary Mandela has grown into a distinctive destination where history is not merely remembered but experienced. Today the home continues to welcome guests from around the world with thoughtful hospitality rooted in Madiba’s values of humility, generosity and Ubuntu.
September holds special significance. As South Africa observes Tourism Month under the theme “Growing South Africa’s Tourism Sector in the Digital Era” and prepares for Heritage Day on 24 September, Sanctuary Mandela invites visitors to engage with a living legacy. On Heritage Day the hotel will offer complimentary guided Heritage House Tours (subject to availability), allowing guests to walk through the spaces where Nelson Mandela lived from 1992 to 1998, welcomed world leaders, and shaped key moments in the nation’s democratic journey.

Guests can experience the newly launched summer menu at Insights Restaurant, a historical “food-print” of Nelson Mandela’s modest tastes, refined and modernised while paying homage to diverse African heritage. Diners may order from the full à la carte summer menu. For groups of ten or more, two set menu options are available: Set Menu 1 at R785 per person and Set Menu 2 at R855 per person. At our media luncheon, guests enjoyed Set Menu 2, featuring dishes such as Veld Fire & Fennel, Salt & Earth, The Cederberg Catch, Lamb from the Past, and desserts including Ubuntu and Summer Breeze. The restaurant continues to draw on the spirit of home and heritage that defined life in this house.
Recent recognition as a being officially graded as a Five Star Boutique Hotel and a Travel Noire 2026 honouree further underscores the property’s resonance. The nine curated rooms, each named after one of Mandela’s names or titles (including Room 2 – Rolihlahla), offer guests a personal connection to the stories woven through the home.

The fifth-year milestone also reflects ongoing community impact. During Mandela Month the hotel’s annual Pads Drive, supported by guests, team members and the wider community, collected 703 packs of sanitary pads and provided 67 young women with a full year’s supply of sanitary products.
