Welcome to the Kultura Festival – the first cultural festival in Cape Town’s northern suburbs! Seven top performances and several purposefully curated events will bring the community together for a vibrant celebration of the area’s rich history, diverse heritage and dynamic culture. From Friday, 20 June to Friday, 27 June, Curro Durbanville High School, the proud custodian of the festival will come alive with music, stories, food and wine that reflect the spirit of the north. The newcomer to the annual cultural calendar’s line-up has been hand-picked to offer something for every taste.

South Africa’s doyenne of the theatre, Sandra Prinsloo, will open the festival on 20 June with her critically acclaimed one-woman show, Kamphoer – die verhaal van Susan Nell. This poignant performance delves into the harrowing story of Susan Nell, a survivor of the Anglo-Boer War’s atrocities. Under the expert direction of Lara Foot, the play masterfully portrays resilience and confrontation with past trauma, and essentially the power of the human spirit.

Marion Holm dazzles in the first of three productions on Saturday 21 June, when she will enchant the audience in her latest one-woman show, Marion Monroe, blending her signature wit and honesty with a fresh array of characters. Co-written with Chris Vorster, this comedic gem explores identity and self-perception, delivering heartfelt laughs and poignant moments. Holm’s enduring charm and storytelling prowess make Marion Monroe a standout production, earning accolades and selling out venues across South Africa.

Adding even more humour is Marc Lottering in Marc Eugene Lottering, a comedic triumph that offers a deeply personal glimpse into his life and heritage. In this critically acclaimed production, Lottering shares never-before-told stories, including his hilariously absurd belief as a child that his family were “blonde German-Caribbeans,” a notion inspired by his mother.

Closing out Saturday 21 June will be comedy legend, Barry Hilton, with Unscripted, “because I get on the stage and start talking about anything that comes to my mind”. Known for his clean, relatable humour and uncanny ability to connect with audiences, Barry’s performance will have you in stitches from start to finish.

On Sunday 22 June, the festival’s grand symphonic showcase Symphony and Song features the incredible Zanne Stapelberg, accompanied by the Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. Together, they’ll deliver a breathtaking performance that spans operatic arias, musical theatre hits, and fiery tangos, oh, those tangos! This spellbinding collaboration is a highlight you and your whole family won’t want to miss.

Think Ben Ten and Tuesday night 24 June immediately gets brighter as Afrikaans rap royalty Early B brings his witty lyrics and infectious beats to light up the stage. Together with DJ Justin Vega they will get everyone to skud jou biscuit!

The three best high school bands in The Band Battle competition will rock it out on stage during The Band Battle concert on 27 June. Rock legend Francois van Coke is not only the main judge; he and his full band will also take the stage as the evening’s guest artists, performing after the school bands. The Kultura Festival is more than just an event – it’s a vibrant celebration of Afrikaans, culture, and community.
