About Manuka Honey and UMF
Made from the nectar of New Zealand’s native manuka flowers, manuka honey is renowned for its unique qualities and has been used in traditional Māori medicine for centuries. Its natural antibacterial and antibiotic properties are far superior to those of other honeys because of the high content of methylglyoxal (MGO). This is the antibacterial component found in most types of honey but in much larger quantities in manuka.
The Unique Manuka Factor (UMF) rating is a scientifically developed scale for rating the potency of manuka honey. As part of the UMFHA (Unique Manuka Factor Honey Association), each lot of Tahi honey is scientifically tested in an independent laboratory and given a UMF rating from 5+ to 20+. The higher the rating, the more active antibacterial properties the honey has. UMF 20+ is a very active and very rare honey. Only manuka honey independently tested and packaged in New Zealand with a UMF rating is guaranteed to be genuine manuka honey.
