What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon in Jozi than lazing in the sun with good food and good company. Ten Bompas’s monthly Picnic In Our Park is a real treat and brings together all the best elements of their all-suite hotel, Winehouse restaurant and SPACE contemporary conference centre.
A long table stretching the length of the lawn, with mounds of pillows greets you. The first thing I wanted to do was run and jump straight into them. Thank heavens I didn’t and opted to rather head to the well-stocked bar for a cold G&T to keep cool in the afternoon sunshine.
With some music playing in the background, the environment was classy yet relaxed and it was lovely to take a stroll through the garden and chat to some fellow picnickers. Before long we were all one big jovial bunch chatting and sipping champagne. It’s amazing who you meet at these types of events, from attorneys and families to restaurateurs and even art patrons. A very eclectic mix which adds to the appeal of these get-togethers.
The food was also a highlight with fresh breads and gourmet butters in ample supply, followed by individual salads and a delicious selection of cheeses, crackers, cold meats, grapes and olives. As the afternoon sun moved on and the shadows lengthened, we all lounged amongst the pillows. The old saying of “magies vol, ogies toe” (tummies full, eyes closed) could not have been more true.
Eventually it came time to bid my new friends adieu and leave the tranquil picnic setting – one that I will definitely return to soon.
