Debbie Spazzoli claims final spot in finale of Cooking for a Cause with boerewors-inspired Italian dish.
Cooking for a Cause – delivered by DHL has rounded up its final contestant for Season 2. Debbie Spazzoli from Bryanston delivered a “Lasagne Tre Modi” – lasagne in three ways – with her boerewors cooked with tomato, chilli and wine, stealing the show for Chef David Higgs. The final cookoff takes place at the Miele kitchen showroom on Monday, 16 November at 6pm, live on David’s YouTube channel – Dave’s Kitchen.
“Debbie’s boerewors was one of the best things I’ve tasted in the last four weeks,” says David. “It was an incredible balance of flavours, acidity and meatiness. I couldn’t stop eating it and kept going back for more – that’s real comfort food.”
Alongside Debbie, this week’s contestants included Bridget Camacho (IG: @bridgey_shan), Michael Krige (IG: @munchmeasuredmeals), Jan Kohler (IG: @jan_kohler_cooks).
Each Monday over the last four weeks, four Johannesburg-based contestants were selected to compete in a nail-biting 60-minute live cookoff. On Monday afternoons, each contestant received an ingredient box from Food Lover’s Eatery, delivered by DHL. This week’s ingredients included boerewors, bacon, beetroot, cabbage, butternut, mushrooms, samp, chilli, onion, garlic, basil and Fatti’s & Moni’s Bellisima linguine pasta.
“This week’s show also proved the versatility of one of South Africa’s favourite braai meats – boerewors,” says co-host and well-known TV Anchor, Marcelle Gordon. “Our contestants tonight showed that it doesn’t have to just be a braai afterthought and can hold its own with different sides and can even be deconstructed.”
The contestants are encouraged to be as creative as possible with the ingredients – and are not allowed use any pre-made sauces or condiments from their own cupboards. At 7pm sharp, DHL collects the contestants’ dishes and delivers them to David’s home for judging. David and Marcelle judge the dishes based on taste, presentation and gees.
All proceeds from the show will be donated to the Eat Out Restaurant Relief Fund. During lockdown, the fund kept hope alive in many kitchens across the country. They produced meals for the old and frail, those who’d lost their jobs, and the children who weren’t getting their meals at school. Even as restaurants have begun to reopen, the fund continues to support the industry.
Viewers can also purchase copies of each week’s recipes via with the funds raised, also going to Eat Out’s fund via Quicket.
Cooking for a Cause is proudly delivered by DHL and sponsored by Food Lovers Eatery, Fatti’s & Moni’s, Miele, Bacardi and Boschendal Wines. The series is produced by Premier Lifestyle (IG: @premierlifestylesa) and OTS Events (IG: @ontrendstylevents).
