In Bedfordview, Char Grillhouse turns the timeless ritual of cooking over flame into a warm and memorable dining experience

There are some meals that feel bigger than the food on the plate. Meals that carry memory, meaning and a quiet sense of celebration. My recent visit to Char Grillhouse was exactly that – an evening shared with my mom as we celebrated her 70th birthday, surrounded by the comforting flavours of some of her all-time favourites.

On a rainy Johannesburg Friday evening, stepping into Char felt immediately inviting. The restaurant leans into South Africa’s deep-rooted love for cooking over fire, where wood, smoke and time transform quality ingredients into dishes layered with flavour. It’s a philosophy that honours tradition while creating a space that feels warm, contemporary and welcoming.

We were greeted at the door by Mary, who guided us to a cosy corner table where the two of us could settle in and enjoy the evening quietly together. There’s something special about being tucked into a comfortable nook in a restaurant – especially when the occasion calls for conversation, nostalgia and a little indulgence.

Our waitress for the evening, Sizie, took care of us with effortless warmth. Her easy smile and attentive service made us feel instantly at home, a welcome contrast to the chilly weather outside.

Shortly after we settled in, a thoughtful little welcome snack arrived at the table: toasted brioche topped with delicate onion rings and served with a creamy aioli. Crisp, buttery and lightly indulgent, it was the perfect way to begin the evening.

When it came to choosing mains, Sizie offered a confident recommendation that we were more than happy to follow. Char’s menu celebrates the power of open-flame cooking, and it felt only right to lean into their speciality.

I opted for the 300g Ribeye, while Mom chose what she described as her absolute favourite – the 200g Fillet. Both were finished with the restaurant’s signature Char house basting, a subtle glaze that enhanced the natural richness of the meat without overpowering it.

When the plates arrived, it was immediately clear that Char understands the art of cooking steak well. The ribeye was deeply flavourful, beautifully seared and tender in all the right ways, while Mom’s fillet delivered that buttery softness that makes the cut such a classic.

To accompany our steaks, we ordered a trio of sides that felt like the ultimate comfort-food line-up. The House Hand-Cut Triple Cooked Tallow Fries arrived golden and crisp, their richness amplified by the traditional cooking method. The Shoestring Onion Rings were delicately crunchy and dangerously moreish, while the Parmesan Mash – always one of my personal favourites – was silky, savoury and wonderfully indulgent.

Of course, nostalgia has a way of sneaking into moments like this. Unable to resist a little throwback indulgence, I ordered a Bar One Milkshake, a decadent treat that transported me straight back to childhood holidays and simpler times. Thick, creamy and unapologetically sweet, it was pure comfort in a glass. Mom opted for a hot chocolate, which felt perfectly suited to the rainy evening and the cosy atmosphere around us.

Before dessert arrived, Mary returned to our table with a thoughtful surprise for Mom – a little “Sweetie Pie” birthday treat that instantly brought a smile to her face. In a moment that perfectly captured the spirit of the evening, she also pulled out an Instax camera and snapped a photograph of the two of us together. It was a small gesture, but one that transformed the night into something we’ll always remember.

Dessert, naturally, was non-negotiable. Mom chose the Bar One Cheesecake, a rich and creamy tribute to the chocolate bar we clearly both adore. Decadent without being overwhelming, it delivered exactly the sweet nostalgia she was hoping for.

I, meanwhile, couldn’t resist the Amarula Malva Pudding – a buttery baked malva served with coconut dukka and silky crème anglaise, accompanied by a generous shot of Amarula on the side. Warm, comforting and proudly South African, it was the perfect way to end the meal.

By the time we finished dessert, the rain outside had softened to a gentle drizzle and the restaurant hummed quietly with the contentment of other diners enjoying their own evenings around the fire.

Char Grillhouse understands something important about hospitality: great food is only part of the experience. The real magic lies in how people feel when they gather around the table.

On this particular evening, Char delivered exactly what we needed – exceptional steak, comforting flavours and heartfelt service that turned a simple dinner into a beautiful birthday celebration. And for Mom’s 70th, that felt just about perfect.
