Chef Moses Moloi inspires the home cooks to create magic with mushrooms
When the Top 8 contestants enter the MasterChef South Africa kitchen this week, they will walk into an enchanted forest filled with an assortment of mushrooms. The scene is set for a visit by the world-famous local culinary “mushroom whisperer”, Chef Moses Moloi.
In an elimination challenge, with the previous week’s winner, Chanel, on the gantry, seven of the remaining home cooks will be tasked with recreating one of Chef Moses’ scrumptious creations, celebrating our country’s bounty of beautiful forests.
Despite having access to Chef Moses’ recipe and getting valuable tips from the guest judge, this will turn out to be the most intense assignment to date. It’s an intricate dish from the food-making giant who was named the Best Chef of the Year at the 2024 Restaurant Awards. Preparing the various types of mushrooms to produce the perfect combination of flavours is also incredibly tricky.
However, one contestant is dreading the challenge more than anyone else. As we learnt last week during the blindfolded taste test, Refe is not a fan of mushrooms. Will the returnee contestant, who received a lifeline after being eliminated, manage to avoid the chopping block?
Besides Chanel and Refe, the other contestants still in the show are Bridget, Lona, Nash, Nabila, Naledi and Penny.
