I love waffles and ice-cream, and I love ice-cream cones, so whoever came up with the concept of a waffle cone is an absolute genius. Furthermore, whoever came up with making that waffle a bubble waffle, is an even bigger genius. As you can probably tell, I’m really passionate about this product.
Plan B Dessertery is a dessert café currently found in five different locations around South Africa that offers myriad sweet treats to its patrons. From bubble waffles, sweet tacos, churros, and the good old ice cream cone, one is guaranteed to find something on the menu to satisfy their sweet tooth. As one walks in, the vibrant interior of the café lets one know that they’ve arrived at the right place, decorated with accents of the famous Plan B turquoise blue. The only trouble with the place? It’s so darn difficult to choose what to order! If only I had five stomachs.
My first ever bubble waffle was The Chocoholic. Initially I thought that there was no way I was going to be able to finish it, but I ended up eating every single bite. It is probably one of the most delicious things I have ever eaten in my life. Rich creamy chocolate ice-cream, crunchy Oreo pieces, sticky chocolate and caramel sauce, all topped off with cream? This is the stuff that dreams are made of. On my second visit to Plan B (the very next week, no jokes) I decided to have something different and ordered the Bees Knees. My favourite is still The Chocoholic, but the Bees Knees comes in a very close second. Beautifully sweet caramel ice-cream, crisp pieces of honeycomb and caramel sauce is what makes up this delectable creation. One of the things I was really impressed by after trying these waffles is that not only do the soft airy bubbles make it easier for one to eat by scooping up bite-sized pieces, but the bubble waffles themselves taste amazing. I generally avoid ordering waffles out as the ones I make at home are so much tastier, but since eating the waffles at Plan B I’m hard pressed to remember a waffle that has ever tasted better.
For research purposes, I thought it would be an extreme oversight to not try a sweet taco too, so I decided to have the Caramello Taco to see what all the fuss was about. I was not disappointed. The shell of the taco has that classic sweet caramel flavour of a golden-brown sugar cone and is super crisp and crunchy, pairing well with the smooth creaminess of the caramel ice-cream. Add the candied nuts, caramel sauce and toasted (yes, toasted!) marshmallow meringue and you have yourself the ultimate indulgent treat. Sunbow and Banana Split tacos are also available and look unbelievable.
These are the desserts I’ve tried so far, but I can’t wait to go back and try them all! The Lemon Meringue bubble waffle in particular has my name on it. Oh, and the giant churros. The Plan B Dessertery team has loads to be proud of, so the next time you feel like treating yourself, pay them a visit and show them some love on Instagram – it’s impossible not to document your visit.
