Made by Heart. Crafted by Patience
The Balvenie, renowned for its unique range of single malt Scotch whiskies handcrafted in the heart of Speyside, defined by a legacy of craftmanship, heritage and passion, proudly launches The Makers Project in South Africa – a global collaboration exploring modern creativity and craftmanship while celebrating the human pursuit of mastery and artistry that transforms craft into the extraordinary.
In its South African debut, the campaign reveals visionary creators: Casandra Davis, culinary innovator and head chef at SINN, Maia Lehr-Sacks, sculptural paper artist, with other creative minds to be revealed in the coming weeks.
Each Maker embodies the same reverence for process, tradition, experimentation and innovation that lies at the heart of The Balvenie’s whisky-making. Just as The Balvenie meticulously crafts its single malts through the Five Rare Crafts, so too do the local Makers channel patience, creativity, and character into their own disciplines.
A Global Celebration of Craft
The Makers Project originated globally in partnership with Harper’s Bazaar, spotlighting modern creators who, like The Balvenie’s craftsmen, devote decades to refining their artistry. Globally featured Makers include perfumer Aurélien Guichard, British designer Alice Temperley, and Michelin-starred chef Michel Roux Jr.
“The Makers Project honours those who elevate tradition with innovation, and who demonstrate the patience and character required to reach the pinnacle of their craft. It is about celebrating the human touch that transforms something good into something truly exceptional,” says Kelsey McKechnie, The Balvenie’s Malt Master. “The Makers Project brings this to life by honouring modern creators around the world who share our passion for process. It’s about spotlighting the soul behind the skill, whether it’s whisky, art or food and showing how that human touch transforms something good into something truly exceptional.”
A Taste of What’s to Come
The South African launch was unveiled through an exclusive epicurean showcase, inspired by Balvenie’s Five Rare Crafts. Hosted at Sinn restaurant, the event immersed guests in a journey of creativity and craftsmanship.
McKechnie explains that at the heart of The Balvenie lies an unwavering commitment to the Five Rare Crafts. “It’s a time-honoured practice that sets the distillery apart as one of the last in Scotland to maintain them all in-house.”
“From cultivating its own barley and maintaining a traditional malting floor, to employing a dedicated coppersmith and cooperage, and guided by the expertise of its Malt Master, each element safeguards authenticity and character,” she adds. “This rare dedication ensures that every drop of The Balvenie single malt is not only crafted with patience but also carries the distinctive depth, integrity, and individuality that comes from preserving true craftsmanship.”
Two of the artisans who form part of the Makers Project in South Africa presented their five pillars in relation to The Balvenie: Cassandra Davis led guests through the five pillars of the perfect dish and the five pillars of the perfect dessert, while Maia Lehr-Sacks unveiled her Five Pillars of the Perfect Scene, a sculptural reflection of her upcoming paper art window installations for Norman Goodfellows outlets. The experience was intertwined with an appearance by Gift Makoti, the Balvenie South Afruca Brand Ambassador, who shared the historical and creative significance of The Balvenie’s Five Rare Crafts, followed by a guided tasting of the 12YO, 14YO Caribbean Cask and 21YO PortWood.
The Makers Project is a powerful convergence of craft and creativity and a tribute to character, patience, and the extraordinary results of true craftsmanship. It’s a toast to makers everywhere.
